We have been making some fun puppets for enrichment clusters. This is a spring inspired puppets and we performed "Five Little Flowers". I wish I could add the video to my free weebly account to show you just how darn cute they are singing, acting, dancing, reading, and all of the learning involved in readers theater puppets shows!
Another fun bulliten board that inspires me to read, so I am hoping it will inspire my young readers too!!!!! It's hard to believe that these sweet First Graders that swept me off my feet on the first day of school are now 120 days into Frist Grade. Time sure does fly when we are having fun learning! We had some fun centers for our 120th day celebration! We have been learning some new words during our sun and moon unit. Practice using these words in conversation. Spring is right around the corner. I had to show off my spring inspired bulletin board! Get to growing!!! We have a morning excercise routine every morning. Studies show that when students move it enhances their learning. Here is a picture of us in action! It is also lots of FUN! We had a writing celebration to end our "how to" writing unit. We invited fifth grade to listen our published books. Ms. German's class came for a visit. We even had some brother and sister combos.... How cool!!! We are always happy when we can celebrate good writing with great role models! Which donut would you pick? Our class took a survey to figure out the type of donut most students liked within the class. We voted on sprinkled donuts, glazed, and chocolate donuts. We determined that most students liked sprinkled donuts. We also generated several questions about donuts when examining our graph. How much fun can you have learning about recycling? A LOT. We had a blast learning about what items we can recycle and how the process works. We even sang a fun recycling song! We created pet rocks during our rocks unit. We assigned properties to our rocks ( shiny, dull, rough, smooth, hard, soft, color, etc.). We also had a little fun describing what out pet rocks enjoy doing in their free time. We tired to fill a circle with cubes. We realized this task was hard because it is impossible to fill a shaped that is curved with a shape that has straight edges. Next, we filled a triangle with shapes. We tried to come up with various ways. As you can see in the pictures there were several DIFFERENT ways to fill the triangle. We kept tallies of the # of different shapes we used in our math journals. Next, we filled hexagons with a variety of shapes. LOOK at all the combinations. Wow! Finally, we we used combinations of shapes to create a new 7 sided shape. We have been learning about time to the hour and half hour. What better way to learn than to become the actual clock? Check out Mrs. Burt's first grade clock (insert wink). We are having so much fun that I am falling way behind in documenting the fun, lol. These are the pictures from our last day before the winter break. We had Santa's workshop centers where students worked on letters to a family members, frames to frame a special holiday picture, candy cane ornaments that developed fine motor control, and Christmas tree pictures. We felt like real elves working on our wonderful creations. During our measurement unit we investigated just how big a foot really is. I wanted the students to gain a greater understanding for area because they will be learning more about area in 2nd and 3rd grade. We also placed our foot sizes in numerical order. We had so much fun at the York County Planetarium. Upon arrival we created a model of the solar system using our classmates. We learned a lot about the planets and their attributes. Next, we went into the Planetarium. It was SO cool to see the planets surrounding us. We had a pretty cool alien tour guide. Next, we toured the animals within the museum. We ate lunch in the picnic area and then we went on a hike to view the wilderness (river and cool plants). We even saw a lizard!
We had a community helper come to visit before Halloween. He taught us how to be safe on Halloween and he described his job as a community helper. We understood how he keeps us safe. We spent last week investigating pumpkins. We estimated the number of lines on the outside of our pumpkins. Congratulations to Reed and Destiny for coming closest. We used rich describing words to describe the outside and inside of our pumpkins. We made predictions if we "thought" the pumpkins would sink or float. We experimented and found out that pumpkins floats, no matter the size. We estimated the number of seeds within the pumpkin. I also was able to capture their faces on film after investigating the "guts" of the pumpkin. Their faces were PRICELESS! We took a single piece of construction paper and used our problem solving skills to make the longest paper chains. We competed to see which group could make the longest. We took these papers and made them into this....... Congratulations blue table for problem solving to make the longest chain during our length and measurement unit. There will be no school on October 25th because the teachers will be working to plan amazing things for the upcoming months :) Over the past two weeks we have been focusing on the following " chunks" -sh -ch - th Any time you see these chunks make sure to point them out and have your child say the sound. |
