Which donut would you pick? Our class took a survey to figure out the type of donut most students liked within the class. We voted on sprinkled donuts, glazed, and chocolate donuts. We determined that most students liked sprinkled donuts. We also generated several questions about donuts when examining our graph.
How much fun can you have learning about recycling? A LOT. We had a blast learning about what items we can recycle and how the process works. We even sang a fun recycling song! We created pet rocks during our rocks unit. We assigned properties to our rocks ( shiny, dull, rough, smooth, hard, soft, color, etc.). We also had a little fun describing what out pet rocks enjoy doing in their free time. We tired to fill a circle with cubes. We realized this task was hard because it is impossible to fill a shaped that is curved with a shape that has straight edges. Next, we filled a triangle with shapes. We tried to come up with various ways. As you can see in the pictures there were several DIFFERENT ways to fill the triangle. We kept tallies of the # of different shapes we used in our math journals. Next, we filled hexagons with a variety of shapes. LOOK at all the combinations. Wow! Finally, we we used combinations of shapes to create a new 7 sided shape. We have been learning about time to the hour and half hour. What better way to learn than to become the actual clock? Check out Mrs. Burt's first grade clock (insert wink). We are having so much fun that I am falling way behind in documenting the fun, lol. These are the pictures from our last day before the winter break. We had Santa's workshop centers where students worked on letters to a family members, frames to frame a special holiday picture, candy cane ornaments that developed fine motor control, and Christmas tree pictures. We felt like real elves working on our wonderful creations. During our measurement unit we investigated just how big a foot really is. I wanted the students to gain a greater understanding for area because they will be learning more about area in 2nd and 3rd grade. We also placed our foot sizes in numerical order. |
